"We welcome you all, our Food Science and Technology (FST) students with a sense of pride and excitement. Our department and staff are committed to ensuring that we have a welcoming and safe community for all students. The department of Food Science and Technology was established in 2008 with a purpose of providing qualifiers with knowledge and skills in Food Science and Technology and satisfy the needs of society for sustainable food quality, safety, and security including the production, storage, distribution, marketing of food and beverages produced from agricultural raw materials. Degree holders will be able to demonstrate the ability to describe food science and technology principles to meet the needs of the society, choose technologies in the development of animal and plant-based food products, conduct laboratory analysis and determine the physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics of food, conduct sensory evaluation of food products, ensure safety and quality of food along the food production and distribution chain, develop and maintain small and medium scale food enterprises, participate in educational activities to expand knowledge of professional practice and enhance own competencies and performance, conduct research in the area of food science and technology and organize, implement and manage food production and delivery through the provision of leadership and technical support. Employment opportunities for graduates of the BSc Food Science and Technology exist within the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Science Research Centres, Ministry of Health, tertiary institutions, food manufacturing and catering companies, private companies, and non- governmental and international organizations. The opportunities for self-employment in the informal sector are many and their development will give rise to vibrant locally owned small and medium scale food industries."
