Bachelor of Science in Range Science - BScRS:


The objectives of RFR are to: (a) undertake, promote and facilitate research and scholarly investigations in the fields of natural resources; (b) advance and disseminate knowledge and skills through teaching, learning and practical skills training in the fields of natural resources; (c) contribute to national and international scientific and technological development as well as advancing the intellectual and human resource capacity of the nation of Botswana and international community in the fields of natural resources.

PROGRAMME DURATION:

4 years

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

General Certificate of Secondary Education or equivalent with the following minimum grades: E in English Language, C in Mathematics, C in at least two Pure Sciences or BB in Science Double Award and D in any other subject.

Objectives of the Programme

At the end of programme the graduates should be able to:

  1. Collect, organize and analyse range resource data by applying various inventory and survey methods and compose suitable results for management and planning of rangeland and its resources.
  2. Assess and apply appropriate range animal management practices such as proper stocking rates, monitoring, application of appropriate grazing systems and mixing of different kinds of animals to ensure resource stability for sustainable utilization of rangelands.
  3. Identify the different land use systems, interpret Land Act and other related Acts and also use these as frameworks to regulate and bring about sustainable management and utilization practices in consultation with other land users.
  4. Demonstrate skills in managing integrated range resources at commercial, subsistence and recreational levels by identifying the socio- economic values of range products and showing how to process, package and market range products.
Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities for graduates of BSc Range Science exist within the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Lands and Housing, and Infrastructure, Science and Technology.Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) such as Veld Products Research and Development, Thusano Lefatsheng and Botswana Agricultural Union (BAU) will also offer employment for the BSc Range Science graduates. Graduates of BSc Range Science can gainfully be employed in various research organizations and academic institutions. They can also undertake consultancies and/or operate their own ranch businesses.
