Dixon Olutade Torimiro, PhD
Professor: Agricultural Extension & Rural Sociology
Faculty of Agri-Business, Education and Extension
Department of Agricultural Education, Extension and Rural Development
I hold MSc and PhD degrees in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, and a Bachelor of Agriculture degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria. I have over 30 years of distinguished experience in teaching, research, extension/outreach, and community service, complemented by extensive international academic exposure. I have served in diverse capacities as a visiting scholar, visiting fellow, visiting scientist, external examiner, professorial assessor, and sabbatical staff across Nigeria, Botswana, South Africa, Eswatini, Ghana, Senegal, Belgium, Germany, Canada, and the United States of America.
I am currently a full Professor and former Head of the Department of Agricultural Education, Extension and Rural Development at the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN), a position I held for three (3) years. Prior to this, I served as Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer at Ogun State University for four (4) years, and subsequently joined Obafemi Awolowo University, where I rose through the academic ranks to full Professor in 2009. During my tenure at OAU, I served as Acting Head of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development for two (2) years, and as Pre-Degree Programme Coordinator and Management Committee Member of the Centre for Distance Learning for three (3) years. I also previously served as a full Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology at the University of Botswana (Botswana College of Agriculture), now BUAN, between 2013 and 2015.
My international and professional engagements include serving as a Laureate of the Child and Youth Studies Institute of CODESRIA, Senegal, and a member of its Multinational Working Group. I was an ECOWAS–AAU Academic Staff Exchange Fellow at North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, South Africa, and an International Extension Scholar-in-Residence at The Ohio State University, USA. I have served as an Independent Expert Evaluator for the Association of African Universities (AAU) and on European Commission panels reviewing Horizon 2020 and Erasmus-Youth research proposals. I am a former Member of the Board of Trustees of Crawford University, Nigeria, and a member of Botswana’s National Steering Committee on the Review of the Draft Rural Development Policy (2023–2024).
I currently provide strategic leadership in implementing the four (4) pillars of the BUAN Extension Strategy Framework, including the BUAN Adopted Village Extension (BAVE) initiative and the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Laboratory (AMREL) with BUAN Radio, efforts that culminated in the publication of Botswana’s first agricultural extension book. I also co-initiated the International Research and Development Network of Children and Youth in Agriculture Programme (CYIAP-Network) in 1999 and currently serve as Chair of its Board of Trustees, supporting youth-focused research, advocacy, and sustainable agricultural development globally.
